Mytech Culture Experience September 2012

This month we would like to reflect on our August value of "Foster a culture of praise" by highlighting one of our Mytech team members who exemplifies this value every day – Nathan Abernathy. Nate or as we call him around the office "Abernathy" has been with Mytech for over 4 years now and is always positive, energetic and enthusiastic with everyone. Abernathy at one point earned the nick name of being the Mytech Cheerleader since he was always encouraging everyone to stay positive and telling them that they were doing a great job. We were all glad to see however that he did not dress up like a cheerleader at the annual costume, bowling outing! In addition to being someone who issues praise and words of encouragement directly to fellow Mytech staff, Abernathy also exemplifies this value because he encourages others (myself included) to make sure we Foster a culture of praise.

Abernathy's primary role at Mytech is Inside Business Development which means that he is here at our office day in and day out working with our customers. Abernathy's daily priority is to keep any subscriptions current, any security services renewed, server warranties extended as well as assisting with procuring new PC's, laptops, printers etc. in order to make our customers lives easier. Abernathy has set the precedent of fast response, quick turnaround time on orders and doing whatever it takes to meet a customer's deadline. Nate takes his role personally and I know that it bothers him if he gets even a little behind (which is extremely rare) at processing requests for any one of Mytech's customers. In addition to performing the daily Inside Business Development function at Mytech Abernathy also participates in our Culture Committee, our Culture Interviews and he often will lead tours of our office when we have visitors stop by for a meeting or lunch. Abernathy has an infectious enthusiasm about him whether you speak with him on the phone or in person and will always try and get you to smile or maybe even laugh out loud from time to time. Nate is also a natural leader and people are drawn to his presence – which is not hard to imagine because of his positive, enthusiastic nature – and those are qualities that we at Mytech have come to love and appreciate in Abernathy. Because of Nate's role, not all of our customers interact with him and especially not all of the staff at our customers; however I wish all of you could have that opportunity to connect with Abernathy as you would get to experience first-hand all of the positive items that I did my best to describe above. Nate, on behalf of Mytech and in the spirit of our August value we thank you for being a significant part of our ability to Foster a culture of praise!

Every month Mytech has created a culture board – which used to be paper taped together on a wall by our break room and now is a 10' long black glass board – that has quotations like the one above that reference our monthly value. Our goal is to keep the respective month's value top of mind as well as to give everyone a place to comment on their thoughts relative to that value. Please stop by our office on any given day if you would like to see the fantastic job that our team does to keep the board up to date every month with great content relative to our monthly value. This last month included several quotations in addition to the one above from Mark Twain and here are some of the others:

When I think about those statements I cannot help but realize how important it is to recognize people who have done a great job. Once again I am impressed with the work of our culture committee that last year compiled what we now call Mytech's core values and that they had the vision to understand the impact that would come from a value such as Foster a culture of praise. What a simple act to acknowledge and communicate that you appreciate another's efforts – whether a friend, peer or supervisor – can have such a positive impact on the attitude of others! Additionally, I believe that we can all agree that a compliment must be genuine, lest a negative effect come from the "praise" however presuming that praise is given genuinely what a powerful tool we all have at our disposal! One of the greatest components of the value of Foster a culture of praise is that any business (or person) at any time can execute on this simple act because there is no cost to implement. What is the cost on a compliment? Sending an email does not cost any money. Walking by someone and saying "thank you for this or that" or "great job on that project" does not cost anything. While I agree it does take a conscious effort and a few seconds to send an email or verbally issue a compliment, the time required is insignificant to the overwhelming positive impact that can be had by working to Foster a culture of praise. Imagine if every task that you completed, every interaction you had with a customer, co-worker, vendor partner etc. that you wanted to complete that task in such a quality fashion to emulate the comments from Abraham Lincoln above. Foster a culture of praise - such a simple concept that can have a significant positive impact on your organizations operations by merely acknowledging quality and complimenting those that deserve recognition. Here at Mytech we are still learning to be better at taking a moment to compliment and acknowledge team members and find new and unique ways to show appreciation – such as our new SharePoint discussion board called Mytech Praise. We will never stop learning (which happens to be Mytech's September value) how to improve and if you have any stories to share or suggestions for our team please share them – we would love to hear about how you Foster a culture of praise too!
