Mytech Culture Experience May 2013

This month we would like to reflect on our April value of "Communicate Directly and Openly" by highlighting one of our Mytech team members who exemplifies this value every day – Corey Falls. I have had the great fortune of working directly with Corey as he is part of the Business Development team here at Mytech. When Corey and I connected during the interview process last year one of the criteria that was high on my list was how will Corey communicate, how well does he articulate concepts verbally; can he compose an effective email with follow up information; etc. At first glance these criteria seem basic; however the ability to communicate effectively in verbal and written form is (in my opinion) the exception rather than the norm in our world today. Corey has exceeded my expectations in this critical aspect of how we conduct business and all who have the benefit of working with Corey internally at Mytech or external customers, prospects and vendors will appreciate this unique value Corey delivers.

Corey is a Business Development Executive at Mytech which means that he has several years of experience working with companies in the Small & Medium Business (SMB) market. One of the challenges that our industry faces is communication; albeit we are not the ONLY industry who faces this challenge. Corey's role and responsibility at Mytech is to carry the vision and objectives of our customers and prospects into our team so that we can design solutions to align with our customers goals. Corey's ability to Communicate Directly and Openly is critical to the success of relationships with the customers he serves.

Corey has demonstrated the ability to foster an environment where people are willing to share information about their organization so that we can understand the obstacles that are preventing them from meeting their objectives. That skill is core to Mytech's ability to serve our customers, if we cannot decipher information that is being shared with us, ask thoughtful questions to gain clarity and translate that data into understanding, we will miss the mark when we design our solutions. Corey is on the front lines of facilitating the necessary communication between multiple people and organizations in order to deliver solutions that work for our customers.

The other significant challenge that our industry faces with regard to communication and technology is that most people do not understand what we do. I believe that Corey does an exceptional job of setting expectations and tirelessly working to ensure that the capabilities and limitations of a solution are properly understood. As Gates mentioned above in order to "achiever the kind of freedoms that they're interested in" we need to make sure that we explain the limitations of what technology can do so that those freedoms can be realized with the right solution that meets the business requirements and fiscal objectives. We are thankful to have Corey on our team and I hope that you have the opportunity to meet and connect with Corey too.

Over the past several years the Mytech has invested many hours of coaching and education around how to develop better leaders on our team. With everything we have learned – and much more to go - the words of George Bernard Shaw articulate in such simple form the core problem with communication. I believe that one of the challenges in an organization is that the leadership of an organization will spend hours or weeks and in some cases years developing and planning any given activity for an organization. Spending time planning in and of itself is not the problem, but the very careful planning often makes the planners short-sighted when attempting to communicate all of the details with the team who needs to carry out the plan. For the very reason that the communicators have already hashed through all of the details of the plan and what has taken them hours, weeks or years to conclude often cannot be communicated only once to the team. Therein illustrates the "illusion" that Shaw references in his insightful statement. The investment in coaching and education of our team has helped us with at least one realization relative to this point – a message needs to be communicated seven times before it is understood. A message needs to be communicated seven times before it is understood. A message – ok, I am not going to write that seven times, but you get the point. Part of communicating seven times is also that you should NOT repeat the message using the exact same methods each time. Different methods of communication will connect with different people and unless your organization consists of people who all have the same personality then as a leader of that organization you have to figure out how to communicate Directly and Openly with your team.

Our culture committee needs to be commended once again for selecting a value that continually reminds our entire organization to Communicate Directly and Openly. We choose to reinforce these values in our daily conversation; through dedicating a month to focusing on this value (every April); by acknowledging staff who exemplify this value; and by striving to never stop working to improve how we Communicate Directly and Openly. This value is core to who we are and critical to our growth - each new person in our organization requires us to challenge the status quo and find better and new ways of communication. For our organization to persist we have to foster quality relationships with our customers, our prospects, our vendor partners and our entire staff. Our ability to Communicate Directly and Openly will be measured by the strength of the bonds we create with our customers; the positive impact we have on our community; and the culture that is fostered with our staff. I hope you can join us on this journey to learn and challenge each other to be better communicators and live the better lives that will inevitably come to fruition.
