Mytech Culture Experience August 2015

July introduced our cultural pillar of Accountability and for August this pillar highlights our value to practice both confidence and humility. It can be easy to identify people who exude confidence or who embody humility, but I often find it difficult to really recognize people who do both. Confidence seems to bring about arrogance and humility commonly goes hand in hand with uncertainty. Together they are values that are very desirable to possess.

So how does someone exhibit both values? Sometimes it's just knowing when to use one value and when to use the other. In this pillar, Accountability, humility is a lot easier to practice than confidence and maybe more appropriate. When we hold ourselves – or others hold us – accountable, it has a lot more meaning if we are humble.

In relation to Dr. Larry Little's Make a Difference, confidence is the strength of a Lion while humility is more of a Turtle thing. The two don't really overlap. If I had to pick an animal that is the closest to both I suppose it would be the Monkey. Monkeys are outgoing but also value the approval of others.

This month I recognize Rudy Bakker for practicing confidence and humility. Rudy is a very smart engineer and his confidence puts the people he helps at ease. They know that he knows what he is doing and that he will resolve their problems. He's also not afraid to admit when he doesn't know something and seeks the advice of others. It's also very common to see someone razzing Rudy. He always takes it in stride and dishes it right out again in jest. If it wasn't obvious, Rudy is a monkey.
