The Mytech value we highlight this month is “Foster a culture of praise.” Business leaders agree that employee praise is critical to their happiness and desire to continue with their current employer. Everyone wants to feel appreciated and providing recognition for good work positively enforces the behavior for which they are being recognized. According to a Gallup poll, “Employees who report that they're not adequately recognized at work are three times more likely to say they'll quit in the next year.” Praise is sometimes presented at an annual review, but this is not frequent enough. Praise needs to occur regularly to be effective.

There are a few ways that employees are praised at Mytech, both privately and publicly. Privately each employee is encouraged to recognize peers with Hertz Donuts. These were developed by Sarah Hertz after she recognized the need for us to recognize each other immediately following a praiseworthy event. The Hertz Donut is just a card that is presented to someone, but it shows them immediate recognition from a peer and is something tangible with which they can remember the event. Mytechians are also recognized publicly at special events like quarterly company meetings or the end of the year banquet. At each of these a few people are praised before the whole company for exemplifying our values. Each method of praise shows us that our hard work is recognized and appreciated.

Regular praise from managers and peers alike is a great way to boost morale as long as it has meaning. Praise for the sake of praise loses its value so it’s important to use it for truly praiseworthy events.
