Mytech Culture Experience | June 2016

This month, Mytech Partners celebrates one of my favorite values, Embrace Uniqueness.  Everyone is unique.  Even the person who tries to fit in, be mainstream, or fly under the radar, is one of a kind – a limited edition.

“Today you are you, that is truer than true.  There is no one alive who is Youer than You.” – Dr. Seuss

Many things that make a person unique may be difficult for others to embrace.  I consider myself a very accepting and open person.  Yet, from time to time, I have to remind myself that every person’s perspective in life has been shaped by their unique combination of experiences.  I don’t need to think like them, be like them, persuade, or be persuaded by them.  All I need to do is be respectful, and accept the fact that they are different.

“If you do not intentionally include, you unintentionally exclude” – Neil Lenane

I turn the spotlight on a co-worker, Eddie Danowit.  You’ll have to trust me when I say, Eddie has a unique backstory.  However, that’s not why I’m highlighting him.  I chose Eddie because of his acceptance of others.  He greets everyone with a kind word and a smile.  He doesn’t disparage or ostracize.  Eddie embraces that which makes people unique.  He makes people smile, and feel good about themselves… and I’m proud to work alongside him.

“Strength lies in differences, not in similarities” – Stephen Covey

Creating and maintaining a workplace culture which encourages people to be themselves is good for business!  Once you do, things get easier.  We build trust and more meaningful relationships.  Employees feel more comfortable sharing their ideas, perspectives, and unique set of experiences.  Communication becomes more meaningful and effective between individuals and teams.  As a result, a company’s “idea pool” becomes more diverse and diversity promotes innovation, breeds creativity, and drives business growth.

But diversity is larger than a strategic business initiative.  It’s much more than a person’s religion, age, gender, skin tone, or hair color.  Diversity is the culmination of all the experiences that have sculpted us up to this very point in time in our lives.   Celebrate that which makes you unique.  Be proud of who you are, and if you catch yourself wondering why a person acts, walks, or talks a certain way, put this value into action and embrace uniqueness.
